In the new 8-man double-elim group play format, several powerhouses fail to advance, including Ed, a Tecmo V Final Four player. 6 of the top 8 players from group play, who all secure byes in the Round of 56, hail from Milwaukee or Madison. During this round, Louis B, Flo, Rik, and Garbage Gauthier are all sent packing. In the roundís best game, Jay H knocks out fellow Madisonian James T with a last second diving catch in coverage. In the round of 32, Seth B defeats fellow Madison Final Four veteran Troy H, Tomczak Bowl V champ Luke C loses to online phenom Daboy, Bailey knocks out tourney legend Sobhi, both Vogts fall, both Holzy brothers survive, and Mort silences avgtsbplayerís posse in a nailbiter. In the Sweet 16, Mort sneaks by Seth B in a Tecmo VII final four rematch, Jeff B and Lucas S (both from Kiel) take care of business, and Bailey loses to Chet (who gave the toast at his wedding). Omaha Joe and bgboud also punch tickets to the double-elim Elite 8. In the Elite 8, Chet and Regulator both win twice before facing off in a Tecmo VIII title rematch, and Regular exacts revenge to send Chet to loserís bracket. In the 4th place game, Daboy knocks out Jeff B (who knocked out Mort earlier) in an ugly Packers/Saints game. In the 3rd place game, while down 14-0, Chet returns a kickoff for a TD with Ironhead Heyward at the end of the half, and rides the momentum to victory over Daboy. In the first championship game, Chetís Chiefs knock off Regulatorís Lions, and in the second, Boomer has the game of a lifetime to lead Chet to his second Madison Tecmo title. Chet becomes the first player to repeat in back-to-back years as champion.
